Proxy Audio Device
Sound and audio controller
Proxy Audio Device is a macOS HAL virtual audio driver that redirects all system audio output to a user‑selected physical audio interface. By acting as an intermediate device, it enables macOS’s built‑in volume controls—the menu bar slider, keyboard keys, and other system UI—to adjust the volume of external audio hardware that otherwise lacks software volume control.
The driver is installed as a kernel extension in /Library/Audio/Plug‑Ins/HAL and is managed through a companion settings application. Users can name the proxy device, choose the target output device, and configure the size of the audio buffer that determines latency and stability. A larger buffer reduces the risk of pops or crackles, while a smaller buffer lowers latency.
Targeted at macOS users who work with external audio interfaces—such as musicians, podcasters, or anyone needing precise volume handling—Proxy Audio Device provides a straightforward way to integrate those devices into the operating system’s native sound management without additional hardware or complex configurations.
