Background Music
Control app volumes and record system audio.
Background Music is a macOS utility that manages audio output on a per‑application basis. It adds a volume slider for each running program, allowing users to adjust or boost individual application levels beyond the system default. The tool also records system audio, making it selectable as an input device for QuickTime recordings or other audio‑capture workflows, and can be combined with a microphone via an aggregate device.
A key feature is automatic pausing of music playback when another audio source begins playing, and resuming when that source stops. Supported music players include iTunes, Spotify, VLC, VOX, Decibel, Hermes, Swinsian, and GPMDP, with a straightforward path for adding additional players.
The application installs as a standard macOS app, sets itself as the default output device while running, and can be launched at login. It requires macOS 10.13 or later and is distributed as an open‑source, stable release.
