Vanilla Cookbook is a self‑hosted recipe manager that aims to keep the interface minimal while handling most of the organization automatically. It parses raw ingredient strings, converts units between US,etric, imperial, and metric, and extracts nutrition information into structured tables. Recipes can be scaled, scraped from hundreds of websites via a bookmarklet or URL paste, and exported or imported in multiple formats, allowing users to keep their data under their own control.
The application includes optional AI assistance: with an LLM API key users can invoke features such as automatic ingredient tidying, direction summarisation, language detection and translation, and even generate new recipes from prompts. Supported providers include Google, OpenAI, Anthropic, and Ollama. These tools operate on the parsed recipe text, reducing manual editing.
Designed for hobbyist cooks and anyone who wants a lightweight, privacy‑focused solution, Vanilla Cookbook is released under GPL‑3.0, can be run without a subscription, and offers a progressive web app with shopping lists, cooking logs, user management, and automated database backups.
