XScreenSaver
Screen savers
XScreenSaver provides a large collection of free visual effects that can be used as screen savers across multiple platforms. On X11‑based systems it supplies both the individual saver programs and the framework that blanks and locks the display, while on macOS it integrates with the native screen‑saving service without requiring X11. The same set of effects is packaged as an iOS app for manual demo playback and as Android live wallpapers as well as screen savers.
The project is maintained by Jamie Zawinski and contributors, and its source code is available for all supported platforms. Executable binaries are distributed for macOS, iOS, and Android, allowing users to install the savers directly.
XScreenSaver has been shipped as the default screen‑saver suite on many Linux and Unix distributions since 1992 and celebrated its thirtieth anniversary in 2022, indicating a long‑standing, stable codebase.
